Soloist
Labro’s collaborations with symphonies and orchestras often span dual roles as soloist and composer/arranger. Recent performances with the New World Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, A Far Cry, and others have featured works by Astor Piazzolla (bandoneon) and Sofia Gubaidulina (accordion). He has also premiered new works by contemporary composers including Bryce Dessner, Clarice Assad, and Avner Dorman.
As a composer, Labro is actively expanding the concerto repertoire for both bandoneon and accordion. His orchestral works fuse classical form with tango, jazz, and contemporary elements, offering compelling new repertoire for soloist and orchestra.

100 Years of Astor Piazzolla
At just 12 years old, after a day of playing accordion on the streets of Marseille, Julien Labro wandered into a used record store and spent his hard-earned money on a copy of Astor Piazzolla’s Libertango. That serendipitous discovery sparked a lifelong passion and led him to the bandoneon—forever shaping his musical voice and career.
In celebration of Piazzolla’s centennial, Labro has curated a powerful orchestral program honoring both the iconic and the overlooked gems of the composer’s work. Audiences can expect stirring performances of Libertango, Adiós Nonino, and Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas (The Four Seasons), alongside rarely performed pieces that reveal the full brilliance and range of Piazzolla’s legacy.
